Blog reflection 5

Lesson 1: In today's lesson I started analysing three music videos - Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus, California girls by Katy Perry and lastly Prefect by Pink. I chose these texts because each one had interesting and creative elements which I felt me and my partner could replicate within our own music video.  Check out my 'Analysis of Music Videos'. While I was analysing the music videos, my partner started analysing three magazine adverts.

Lesson 2: In today's lesson as a class we looked at two very unique music videos that use the technical style of "single shot commentary", this is when the whole music video is shot all in once go. The first video we looked at was 'Nostalgia' by Pusha T.  The technique is very effective as it grabs the audiences attention as you think 'wow how did they film that all in one go?' and in turn you become immersed in the video and it's complexity. The second video we looked at was 'Window Seat' by Erykah Badu. The video holds strong political meaning as it references where Malcolm X got shot. It's very slow to begin with but when she does get shot it's very dramatic and you are instantly rewarded as a viewer. I found these videos very interesting!!

Lesson 3: Today's lesson focused on continuing the analysis of the three mediums. My partner finished analysing magazine adverts while i finished off analysing music videos.

Lesson 4: In today's lesson we looked at advertising campaigns, in particular Nipsey's creative advertising strategies. He prices his album at a $100 dollars each, this is very expensive! You would think no one would buy it but its designed in such away that it attracts his true dedicated fans. The advert says 'Be a part of history!', the audience will compete to get the album as there is a limited number of them. This makes the audience feel special because they posses an exclusive item. Along with the album comes merchandise such as t-shirts and tickets to his concert, which is a bonus for his fans. Additionally, he makes his song free to download digitally for those who are not faithful fans. The audience will take advantage of anything free, so its a great way to create word of mouth but most importantly it gives the audience a taste of what his music is about and what kind of artist he is because he is a fresh new artist still trying to establish himself in the music industry and make himself globally known. Lastly, Jay Z bought a hundred of those copies. This stunt caused a stir within the media because Jay Z's audience will hear of this and expect Nipsey to be very good, therefore they will go and listen to his music or buy his album - so Jay Z has introduced a new audience to his music and also has helped grow the rappers fan base as Jay Z is a global star. This has inspired me to be creative when it comes to advertising my own artist! After discussing Nipsey's advertising campaign, me and my partner started working on analysing digipaks.
